You can write the CAT exam in the final year of your graduation. You can write the CAT exam after your graduation as well. There is no upper limit on the number of times you can attempt the CAT exam. There is no age limit on the CAT exam as well.
Having said that, if you have more than 5 years of work-ex attempting the CAT exam would not be ideal. It would be difficult to get admission into regular MBA programs of most good B-schools. Most good B-schools prefer candidates who have 1-2 years of work experience. Anything beyond 4-5 years is considered a bit much by most good colleges. Your chances of getting selected are a bit low as a fresher as well.
So, in summary, the ideal time to write the CAT exam is when you have 1-2 years of work experience. However, you can attempt the CAT exam when you have 0 to 5 years of work experience as well.
