SBI PO 2016 Prelims Exam Syllabus

The dates for SBI PO 2016 exam have been declared and there are less than 2 months left for it. It would be wise if you spent your time wisely preparing for the things you need and ignoring the things that you don’t. After talking to students of my online SBI PO coaching course, we realised that a large number of them are not exactly aware of the syllabus for SBI PO Prelims exam. They sometimes put a lot more emphasis on things that are not relevant and ignore the important areas. To ensure that they do not make the same mistake again, we thought it would be a good idea to list down the SBI PO 2016 prelims paper pattern.

The SBI PO Prelims or Phase I exam for 2016 would be divided in three sections:
a) English Language – 30 Questions – 30 Marks
b) Quantitative Aptitude – 35 Questions – 35 Marks
c) Reasoning – 35 Questions – 35 Marks

While tabulating this list, we looked at various things. We looked at previous year papers and also mock tests from various content providers and given below are the conclusions from it.

Syllabus and Pattern for English Language in SBI PO Prelims Exam – 2016

The areas which you can definitely expect in the SBI PO prelims exam 2016 are:
Reading Comprehension (1 set) – 10 Questions
Spotting the error – 5 Questions
Cloze test – 5 Questions
Parajumbles – 5 Questions

This makes it a total of 25 out of 30 questions. The other 5 could come from any of the three categories given below:
Sentence Improvement
Fill in the Blanks
Synonym – Antonym
In 2015, it was Sentence Improvement and most probably the same would continue.

The cutoff in 2015 for the English Language section was 5.75 marks. Let me add, the sectional cutoffs aren’t really the issue in the SBI PO Prelims exam.

Syllabus and Pattern for Quantitative Aptitude in SBI PO Prelims Exam – 2016

The areas which you can definitely expect in the SBI PO prelims exam 2016 are:
Data Interpretation – 10 Questions
Simplification – 5 Questions
Quadratic – 5 Questions
Number Series – 5 Questions

This makes it a total of 25 out of 35 questions. The other 10 could come from the below categories:
Ratio
Average
Profit and Loss
Time and Work
Time Speed and Distance
Compound Interest and Simple Interest
Percentage
Permutation and Combination
Geometry
Probability

As you can see, these are 10 topics and 10 questions would be allotted to them. Now it is highly unlikely that all the topics would get 1 question each. What would most likely happen is that you would get 2 questions from some of the categories whereas some of the other ones would be missed. This does not mean that you can ignore these categories but definitely you need to focus more on Quadratic / Simplification when compared with Permutation and Combination. In our online coaching course for SBI PO 2016 exam, we cover all these topics in great detail. We conduct live classes every week to clarify whatever doubts that a student might get.
The cutoff for this section was also 5.75 marks in 2015.

Syllabus and Pattern for Reasoning in SBI PO Prelims Exam – 2016

The areas which you can definitely expect in the SBI PO prelims exam 2016 are:
Coding Decoding – 5 Questions
Inequality – 5 Questions
Syllogisms – 5 Questions
Seating Arrangement – 5 Questions
Grid Matrix arrangement (Puzzle Type) – 5 Questions

This makes it a total of 25 out of 35 questions. The other 10 could come from the below categories:
Direction Sense
Number series
Statement and Arguments
Statement and Conclusion
Grid Matrix arrangement (Puzzle Type)
Blood Relations / Family Tree (Regular)
Blood Relations / Family Tree (Symbol based)

Now there are some things that I would like to clarify here. You might see that Number Series appears in both Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning. It is quite possible that you get questions on Number Series in both the sections. You can get 2 sets which are of Puzzle type as well. That is the reason you see it in both the definite and the probable categories. It is unlikely that you would get questions on Critical Reasoning (Statements / Arguments / Conclusions) but it is definitely possible. It would be a good idea if you are prepared for that part of reasoning as well.
The cutoff for the reasoning section was 9.25 marks in 2015.
