## Question Mayank buys some candies for Rs 15 a dozen and an equal number of different candies for Rs 12 a dozen. He sells all for Rs 16.50 a dozen and makes a profit of Rs 150. How many dozens of candies did he buy altogether?

A) 50
B) 30
C) 25
D) 45

Option (A)

## Solution

From CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Arithmetic – Profit and Loss, we can see that,
Number of candies he bought of type 1 = n
Number of candies he bought of type 2 = n
Total candies = 2n
SP = 16.5 * 2n =33n
CP = 12n +15n = 27n
Profit = SP-CP = 6n = 150
n = 25
Total candies = 2n = 50
Option (A)

## Question The manufacturer of a table sells it to a wholesale dealer at a profit of 10%. The wholesale dealer sells the table to a retailer at a profit of 30%. Finally, the retailer sells it to a customer at a profit of 50%. If the customer pays Rs 4290 for the table, then its manufacturing cost (in Rs) is

A) 1500
B) 2000
C) 2500
D) 3000

Option (B)

## Solution

From CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Arithmetic – Profit and Loss, we can see that,
Cost Price (CP) of manufacturer = CP
Selling Price(SP) of manufacturer = 1.1CP = CP (Dealer)
SP (Dealer) = 1.3 * 1.1 CP = CP (Retailer)
SP (Retailer) = 1.5 * 1.3 * 1.1 CP = CP (Customer)
It is given that,
1.5 * 1.3 * 1.1 CP = 4290
On solving, we get, CP = 2000
Option (B)

## Question If Fatima sells 60 identical toys at a 40% discount on the printed price, then she makes 20% profit. Ten of these toys are destroyed in fire. While selling the rest, how much discount should be given on the printed price so that she can make the same amount of profit?

A) 30%
B) 25%
C) 24%
D) 28%

Option (D)

## Solution

As per CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Arithmetic – Profit and Loss, we can see that
Market Price = MP
Cost Price = CP
[(60/100 MP * 60 – 60CP)/60CP] * 100 = 20
MP = 2CP
When 10 toys are burnt in fire, then
[(x/100 *50 * MP – 60CP )/60CP] * 100 = 20
x = 72
So discount given = 100-72 = 28%
Option (D)

## Question In a market, the price of medium quality mangoes is half that of good mangoes. A shopkeeper buys 80 kg good mangoes and 40 kg medium quality mangoes from the market and then sells all these at a common price which is 10% less than the price at which he bought the good ones. His overall profit is

A) 6%
B) 8%
C) 10%
D) 12%

Option (B)

## Solution

As per CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Arithmetic – Profit and Loss, we can see that
Price of good Quality mangoes = p
Price of medium Quality mangoes = p/2
Price at which mangoes are sold = 0.9p
Profit = [( 0.9p * 120 – 100p)/100p] * 100 = 8%
Option (B)

## Question If a seller gives a discount of 15% on retail price, she still makes a profit of 2%. Which of the following ensures that she makes a profit of 20%?

A) Give a discount of 5% on retail price
B) Give a discount of 2% on retail price
C) Increase the retail price by 2%
D) Sell at retail price

Option (D)

## Solution

CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Arithmetic – Profit and Loss
Let Retail Price = MP
Cost Price = CP
When a discount of 15% is given,
[(0.85CP – CP)/CP] *100 = 2
So, 85 * MP = 102 * CP
Let us take SP = xMP
So, [(xMP-CP)/CP] * 100 = 20.
On calculating, we get x = 100
So, we should sell at Retail Price to get a profit of 20%.
