An elevator has a weight limit of 630 kg. It is carrying a group of people of whom the heaviest weighs 57 kg and the lightest weighs 53 kg.
What is the maximum possible number of people in the group?

## Solution

As per the question from CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Algebra – Maxima and Minima, we can see that,
53 + …….. + 57 = 630
Remaining sum of weights = 630 – 53 – 57 = 520
Now, the minimum weight can be 53. So, to find maximum number of people
N(max) = 520/53 = 9.81
So, maximum number of people possible = 9+2 = 11

Arun’s present age in years is 40% of Barun’s. In another few years, Arun’s age will be half of Barun’s. By what percentage will Barun’s age increase during this period?

After going through CAT 2017 – Quantitative Aptitude – Algebra – Linear Equation, we can assume that
Age of Arun = A and age of Barun = B
Let us assume, A=0.4 B —– (1)
After a few years, A+x = 0.5(B+x) —– (2)
On putting value of A in eq (2), we get x = 0.2B
% increase in the age of B = (0.2B/B) *100 = 20%
