A message to our students and all CAT 2016 aspirants

Saturday, December 3rd, 2016

With only few hours to go for the CAT 2016 exam, I do not have any tips to offer. I do not keep you in my prayers as I do not believe in prayers. I do wish all of you best of luck (if a thing like that exists). Having said that, I do hope that all of you perform to the best of your abilities. Some of you have put in couple of weeks whereas some of you have been trying to battle competitive exams for years. I am sure some of you will end up doing better than expected and some of you would disappoint yourself. But what you need to understand is the basic fact that it is just a test. A good result in a test can give you a temporary push and similarly a bad result can hold you back for a little while. It is not the end but just a pit-stop. Whatever happens tomorrow, it would be best if you forget it as soon as you are out of the exam hall and look forward to the next challenge that awaits you.

I know you got talent. I am sure you know that too. The talent that is required for an exam like CAT is very little. At the end, it is a game of pressure. Pressure – it changes everything some people you squeeze them, they focus others fold can you summon your talent at will? Can you deliver on a deadline I don’t know what to say, really. Given below is one of my favorite poems. Hopefully, it would show you a way to handle tomorrow.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

      Got it bookmarked. Thanks a lot. These exams are not an end, only you can wish where to stop. Life is a great opportunity to wander to uncover who you are, to understand yourself, to be something people would remember and be the one you always wanted to be.
