10 Current Affairs topics

As is well known, General Knowledge (GK) forms an important component in the entrance exam for the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade to be held on 1st December this year. GK can broadly be divided into 2 components- static and current. In this blog, we look at some important current affairs topics which students will be well-advised to study further on. The list is based on the kind of topics that have been posted in questions in past years’ papers. Following are some of those topics:


Students must be well-versed with any new central government schemes launched. The PM KISAN Scheme that was announced earlier this year, needs special emphasis. The full form of this is Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi. This is a means of extending direct income support to poorer farmers, owning land up to two hectares. Rs. 6,000/- is to be provided per year.

2. 2019 Lok Sabha & Vidhan Sabha Elections

2019 will go down as a very important year in Indian polity, thanks to the general elections held. Students need to go through the entire list of Cabinet Ministers. Four states also witnessed their Vidhan Sabha elections. The list of Chief Ministers may be procured from India Government, while Cabinet Ministers are listed here.

3. G- 20 Summit

The G- 20 is one of the most powerful and influential global supranational organizations. This year’s meet took place in Osaka, Japan. Several important issues were discussed here, one of them being an aging global population. For more on this, read here.

4. The scrapping of Triple Talaq

This was a landmark judgment. The aim is to empower millions of women in the country. More details may be found here.

5. Chandrayaan 2 & Gaganyaan

With Chandrayaan 2, India will become the first country to make a soft landing on the South Pole of the moon. In a few years, another feather in ISRO’s cap will be the Gaganyaan, which will be the first manned- mission from India. Some useful links on these are Link 1, Link 2 and Link 3.

6. New High Court for AP

Since Telangana’s separation in 2015, the two states were sharing a common High Court and thus a common Chief Justice. Now a plush new High Court has been established at Amaravathi for Andhra Pradesh, while the old one in Hyderabad, is now solely for Telangana. 7. 91ST Academy Awards

Like every year, the Academy Awards this year were much awaited. Green Book won the Best Picture, while Alfonso Cuaron won the Best Director for Roma. The Best Actor went to Rami Malek for the portrayal of Queens’ Freddy Mercury in the Bohemian Rhapsody. Olivia Colman took best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite. his An Indian film also won an award in one of the categories- here.

8. Jnanpith Awards 2019

For the first time in the history of this award, an English language writer took home the top gong. Amitav Ghosh won for his lifetime of riveting literature. More can be read here.

9. New World Bank & ECB Chiefs

The World Bank and the European Central Bank have new chiefs while the IMF is searching for one presently. David Malpass of USA now heads World Bank, while outgoing IMF chief Christine Lagarde now runs the ECB. Several other organizations such as the Interpol and the FAO have had new leadership. 10. ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup

Of course, the Cricket World Cup was a highlight, though ultimately a heart breaker for Indians. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli broke the records along the way for most hundreds in a World Cup and most consecutive fifties for one captain in it.
